In Your clothing is animal hair, your purple is fish blood, Alisa Bones creates a visual syntax from her personal archive of materials, processes, and digital images. Blurring the referential and the inventive, the organic and the geometric, and the optical and the physical, she manipulates long-held painting dichotomies.

Painting on panels that slope out from the wall, Bones situates her paintings as both pictures and objects. She maintains the shifting margins of viewership as a suggestion of an ideal perspective for her audience. Bones embraces this instability of established ideas surrounding painting.

Alisa Bones (b. 1983) is based in New York. She received her BA from Reed College and her MFA from the Yale School of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Fathers of Abstraction (S1, Portland: 2016) and Whore Island (Semantics, Cincinnati: 2016). Bones’ works have been presented in group exhibitions at Gallery Protocol (Gainesville: 2017), Abrons Art Center (New York: 2016), Green Gallery (Yale University, New Haven: 2016), Blackfish Gallery (Portland: 2013), and H.
